Use it or lose it

We read recently that ‘65’ is the new ‘50’!

As our population survives for longer, the expectations in retirement increase. Government figures show that we expect to live 25 years plus into retirement and as such we need to maintain a healthy and fit lifestyle.

Exercise really does increase your ‘love for life’, have you ever noticed how people who exercise have more zest and energy for life?

There are lots of benefits to exercising:

• Exercise helps you maintain or lose weight: Our metabolism gradually slows with age, so maintaining a healthy weight can be a challenge. Exercise increases metabolism, builds more muscle and in turn burns more calories.

• Reduces the impact of illness and chronic disease. People who exercise tend to have improved immune and digestive functioning, healthier blood pressure and bone density, and a lower risk of Alzheimer's disease, diabetes, obesity, heart disease, osteoporosis.

• Enhances mobility, flexibility, and balance. Exercise improves your strength, flexibility and posture, which in turn will help with balance, co-ordination, and reducing the risk of falls. Strength training may also help alleviate the symptoms of chronic conditions such as arthritis.

• Regular Chiropractic care will also help with joint mobility, keeping you flexible and reducing pain, allowing you to continue with your daily life and enjoy exercise, shopping, golf, or playing with grandchildren.

There are mental health benefits to exercise too, these include improved sleep, better moods, self-confidence and improved cognitive ability. Evidence suggests these prevent memory loss and dementia.
