How often should you go to see a Chiropractor?

When you come in for your consultation, one of the things you probably want to know is how often you should come to see your Chiropractor.

The answer is: there is no set number. It will change depending on the person. Some of our patients are in pain, some are now out of pain, and some are with us to prevent pain.

Everyone’s chiropractic journey is different.

Your Chiropractor will complete an in-depth medical history, an examination, and ask you some lifestyle questions. This helps them to have a clear picture of the different factors in your life that could be influencing your health, and therefore how often it’s recommended that you come to see them.

When you come in for your second appointment, your Chiropractor will let you know what they have found, and what plan of care they recommend.

How does chiropractic work?

Chiropractors are trained to look for blockages and interference in the joints of your spine, called subluxations. These are caused by different chemical, emotional, and physical stressors.

Our bodies are great at adapting to all that life has to throw at us. For example, if we drink alcohol, our livers remove the toxins from our body to restore it back to normal.

Our nervous system is responsible for triggering these responses when these stressors are affecting your body. The nervous system is made up of your nerves, brain, and spinal cord, with the spinal cord being protected by the spine.

When a Chiropractor finds this build up in a spinal joint, they use their hands to apply a specific, controlled, force to this joint. This is called an adjustment. The goal of an adjustment is to help your body to heal better. This happens because there is less interference in the nervous system, so the signals between your brain and the rest of your body can be interpreted clearly.

Your healing processes can then work as they should, and that’s why you might start to see a reduction in your pain over time.

When should you see a Chiropractor?

We would always want our patients to come to us before they are in pain. It’s so much easier to prevent pain than it is to get rid of it. There is a spectrum of health that goes from wellness to dis-ease. Your body is in a state of dis-ease long before you are even in pain. You don’t just jump from wellness to dis-ease unless for a sudden event.

Lifestyle factors, like not moving enough, not drinking enough water, and eating too many processed foods, all move you further away from health and closer to sickness. When you repeat this day after day, month after month, it causes a build up of stress and interference.

If you come to see a Chiropractor before you’re in pain, it helps to remove this interference before it builds up enough to start causing problems. This makes it less likely that you will experience pain because chiropractic moves you closer towards wellness than dis-ease.

If you are in pain, you should definitely book in to see one of our Chiropractors. Chiropractic has been proven to help with different types of pain. We adjust spines as a whole to affect the entire body.

We are experts in:

  • Back pain
  • Neck pain
  • Frozen shoulder
  • Sciatica
  • Knee pain
  • Hip pain
  • Tennis elbow
  • Headaches and migraines
Chiropractic is not a quick fix

It takes time for you to get to the point you are in now, so it’s going to take time to get you moving in the other direction. At the start of your care you might be seeing your Chiropractor multiple times a week. This will gradually become less frequent depending on the progress you make.

Even when your pain has gone, you won’t have moved far enough along the spectrum back towards wellness. This will take time too. If you drop out of chiropractic care at this point, and continue with the same lifestyle as before, your pain might return.

By continuing after your pain has gone, you are helping your body to solve the root causes of your pain. It also helps your body to adapt to the stress it comes under. Remember, regular adjustments help to remove the interference before it can build up.

Should everyone see a Chiropractor?

If you have a spine, you should see a Chiropractor.

There will always be something in your lifestyle that is causing your body stress, and stops it from healing properly. You might not even realise when your body isn’t working as well as it should.

The frequency that is suitable for you might differ from someone else; we are all at different points on the spectrum of health. Some might need to come every three weeks, others every four weeks, and so on. So, how often you should see a Chiropractor depends on your individual circumstances and your Chiropractor’s recommendation.
