Can you believe we’re in July already? The last six months feel like they have flown by! It feels like yesterday that we were setting our goal(s) in January for the year. We’re now halfway through 2022, which means it’s the perfect time to slow down, step back, and reflect on the first half of the year.

It’s easy for us to get caught up in our daily routines, and not devote the time to making the changes we promised ourselves we would to meet our goals. By reflecting now, we give ourselves the opportunity to change our approach, so that we can take the steps needed to reach our goals.

How to reflect

It’s so important when you reflect, that you set aside the time to do it without distractions. You want to be able to focus solely on this. Before you start, it’s a good idea to think of questions that you want to answer. This will give you a clear view of what you have achieved, or what you can change.

Here are five questions that you might find useful to guide your reflection:

  1. What were my goals at the beginning of the year?
  2. Are my goals the same, or have they changed?
  3. What do I hear myself saying over and over again? Like, “I really need to stop…” or “I really need to start…”
  4. What am I proud of this year?
  5. What else do I need to do to achieve my goals this year? Do I need to change my habits?

Why should we reflect now?

We’ve all reached the end of the year before and wondered “where did the time go?” We might not have achieved what we set out to do in January, and it can leave us feeling a little deflated.

When you reflect mid-way through the year, it helps you to see how you are progressing towards your goal(s), where there are opportunities to progress further, and if there are any barriers that might be in your way. 

It’s your chance to reset and evaluate.

If you know where you stand and what position you’re in, you’re more likely to be able to make decisions more easily that will benefit you, and push you closer to reaching your goals.

So, grab a journal, talk it through with friends or family, or however you prefer to reflect. Slow down, take stock of everything that has happened since January 1st, and make the most of the rest of the year.
