Nothing ever happens in the future, it happens in the present
25 October 2021
I’m sure we can all agree that we often put things off and say “I’ll try that tomorrow”, or “I’ll start Monday” even if today is Monday. We’re all guilty of doing it at some point. Sometimes there are genuine reasons behind this, but most of the time it’s because we can’t be bothered, or we don’t know how to take that first step.
As Eckhart Tolle said “Nothing ever happened in the past; it happened in the Now. Nothing will ever happen in the future; it will happen in the Now.” If you think about it, the future never arrives. The action that we take always happens in the present moment.
We can’t control the past or the future, but we can control what action we take in the present. If we focus on the present, then we have a greater sense of control and calm as we aren’t trying to control anything that is beyond our reach, only what we can change now. If we accept what we have been given in the present as if we had chosen it ourselves, and then act upon this, it can completely change your outlook on your life.
When we think about the future, it can make us feel anxious or scared. We worry what will happen to our careers if we can’t work because of our pain, or we’re scared of how much worse the pain might be. We can make choices that will influence the future, but pain can make us feel like we’re stuck.
If we want our lives to change, we have to take that first step. If we look too far in the future it can leave us distracted, but we should focus on what we can do to change the situation we are in now. There has never been a better time than now to take that step to start on your journey to reclaiming your health. If you start today, you are one step ahead than if you start tomorrow or next week.
The past and future can help us to make decisions in the present. If we set a goal of where we want to be, like being able to get back to doing that hobby we love, then this can help us to make decisions that move us towards reaching this goal.
Notice the small things that you might not have been able to do before, like how much easier it is to bend over and tie your shoelaces, or being able to walk to the local shop rather than drive. This might have been something you hoped to be able to do in the future, but now you can do that in the present.
Being consistent with what decisions you are making in the present to move towards health and wellness is what we should all be doing. Chiropractic isn’t a quick fix, it takes time for your body to heal and restore itself. The sooner you start to take steps that will get you out of pain, keep you out of pain, and move you closer towards wellness, the sooner you can get back to being your best self again. So, next time you feel out of control, stuck, or anxious about the situation you are in, take the time to think “what can I do now to change this?” and act now, in the present.
