The Willow Walking Challenge is back

Autumn Walks in Bristol willow chiropractic - chiropractic care

The Willow Walking Challenge is back – are you ready? Between 26th and 30th September we will be walking as many steps as we can. You could aim to hit your 10,000 steps a day, or looking at something that is more manageable for you.

As we move into Autumn, nature starts to transform around us. The leaves turn into beautiful shades of burnt oranges and reds, and there is a freshness to the air. But, as the temperature starts to turn cooler, most of us start to retreat inside.

It wouldn’t be a surprise if you were less active in the colder months than in the warmer months. The walking challenge is the perfect way to start moving more. Walking outdoors in autumn can restore a sense of calm in us; something we all need to embrace in our busy lives. It also keeps us more active in the months where we’re more sedentary.

About the Willow Walking Challenge

We all need to be more active, so we’d like to encourage you to take part in our walking challenge. This challenge is all about making a conscious effort to take control of your health and well-being through walking.

If you don’t have access to a smart phone or watch to track your step count, use this as a guide:

  • 20 minute walk = 2400 steps
  • 5 miles = 10,000 steps

“In every walk with nature, one receives far more than he seeks.”

John Muir

Get those around you involved in the challenge too. It’s always easier to stay motivated when you are in a group, but it can also make the walks more enjoyable and social.

After the Willow Walking Challenge

At the end of the walking challenge, we will be having an open day. This is the perfect opportunity for you or your loved ones to come and speak to one of the Chiropractors about how chiropractic might benefit them, as well as having a spinal check. We can then look at getting a consultation booked the Chiropractor thinks that chiropractic care could be beneficial.

This will be taking place on on Saturday 1st October between 9.30am and 12.30pm.

Why should you take part?

Your daily walks give you space to breathe, to let go of your daily stresses, and to embrace the wonders of nature around you. Making time for yourself everyday will make you feel more relaxed, which affects other parts of your life, like your sleep quality.

Walking has so many benefits for both our physical and mental health, but it is often forgotten as a valid form of exercise. Our daily lives are busy, and this isn’t likely to change anytime soon. So, let’s all use this time to make a conscious effort to step back, go outside, and breathe in the fresh air. Walking brings you into the present, so that we are mindful and aware of what is happening at this very moment, not in the past or the future.

Walking also complements your adjustments. Most of the healing happens straight after your adjustments, so you need to make sure you keep your spine moving. Your spinal discs rely on movement and a constant supply of water to receive the nutrients they need to heal.

Five benefits of walking:
  • Improve your cardiovascular fitness and muscle endurance
  • Strengthen bones and muscles
  • Improve your sleep
  • Improve circulation, increase heart rate, and lower blood pressure
  • Be in the present moment to reduce stress and anxiety, and increase your mental alertness

Developing healthy habits, like going for a walk everyday, will work wonders for your health in the long-term. If you didn’t service or MOT your car each year, and didn’t top up the oil or maintain them at all, why wouldn’t we expect problems to arise? Our bodies are the same.

If you aren’t proactive with our health or by exercising regularly, eating well, and coming in for your adjustments, then over time you will see problems start to develop, like pain.
