Healthy snacks to keep you full
25 June 2020
Although snacking has developed a bad reputation over the years, snacks can be an important part of your diet. They provide energy in the middle of the day or when you exercise, which also decreases your hunger and keeps you from overeating at mealtime.
Snacking isn’t usually the issue, it’s the type of snacks you choose to eat. Snacks which are high in sugar, fat or salt and won’t keep you going until mealtimes. The best snacks have a combination of protein and fibre, are nutritious and taste good. We’ve put together a list of easy, speedy options that are healthy too:
Mixed nuts
As a substitute for foods high in saturated fat and sugar (such as biscuits, chocolates or cakes), nuts are an ideal nutritious snack. The high protein and fibre content makes them a satisfying snack and they contain nutrients such as vitamin E, potassium and magnesium. As they don’t require refrigeration, they’re perfect for taking on the go.
Red pepper with guacamole
Red peppers are extremely healthy. Although all peppers are nutritious, red varieties are particularly rich in many vitamins and high in antioxidants, especially vitamin C and various carotenoids. For this reason, they may have several health benefits. Pairing one large red bell pepper with 85 grams of guacamole adds healthy fat and fibre while keeping this snack’s calorie count under 200.
Apple slices with peanut butter
Apples are an excellent source of fibre, while peanut butter contains protein. Eating these two foods together can help keep you feel full longer. It has been shown to increase HDL (good) cholesterol and reduce LDL (bad) cholesterol and triglycerides. A medium apple with one tablespoon of natural peanut butter provides a nice balance of sweet flavour with crisp and creamy textures.
Greek yoghurt and mixed berries
Plain Greek yoghurt and berries make a delicious, nutrient-dense snack. In addition to being a great source of calcium and potassium, Greek yoghurt is also high in protein. Berries are one of the best sources of antioxidants around. Eat a mixture of differently coloured berries to get an array of these powerful compounds.
How we can help
Our chiropractors are passionate about keeping you in the best of physical health. Like a car, you need regular care and attention to prevent any reoccurrence of the problem that caused you pain in the first place. Moreover, maintaining a healthy body will enhance your long-term physical and emotional wellbeing, allowing you to keep doing the things you want to do, for as long as you like.
As well as manual adjustments, chiropractors can offer a package of care which includes advice on self-help, therapeutic exercises and lifestyle changes. Although chiropractors are best known for treating back and neck pain, which they do very well, patients also consult chiropractors regarding their lifestyle choices.
