Chiropractic: Is it safe or dangerous?
16 August 2021
The viral content about chiropractic that circulates around the internet is often videos of adjustments that are filled with popping and cracking noises. If this is your only experience of chiropractic, this can be intimidating. We know it can look or sound like it hurts or is dangerous, but chiropractic treatment really is nothing to worry about.
We want you to be filled with confidence that you’re in a safe, healing space when you come for your treatment. So, let’s talk about this a little more.
The sound you hear isn’t your bones cracking. When the joints are moved apart to get them moving better, a pocket of gas forms between the joints. The “popping” sound that you hear is this pocket of gas collapsing in on itself and releasing the gases inside. This isn’t painful at all.
You might feel a little achy after your first adjustments, but this is completely normal. Your body and spine might have become so used to being in a certain position that when our Chiropractors try to correct this, your body has to adapt. This can take some time, it won’t be fixed straight away. It takes time, energy, and effort to reach your health goals.
All our Chiropractors complete an in-depth medical history, consultation, and analysis before any treatment is given. If your Chiropractor considers it safe for you to receive adjustments based on their findings, then they’re not dangerous. If they don’t believe that chiropractic care is suitable for you, then our Chiropractors will try to point you in the direction of someone they believe might be able to help you.
A lot of people question the safety of chiropractic care, but they rarely question the safety of painkillers. Let’s take a minute to compare the two.
In the last 10 years, the prescription of opioids has risen by about 60%. When someone is in pain, their first port of call tends to be their GP. The GP’s first choice is to prescribe painkillers to make their pain more manageable, but this doesn’t really solve anything.
Long-term use of painkillers can be life threatening. Our bodies can cope with the odd painkiller here and there. Our livers are absolutely amazing at removing toxins from our bodies, but if there’s a constant stream of toxins making their way into our bodies, that’s when they struggle to cope. The toxins are coming into the body quicker than it can get rid of them. That’s when they start to build up in the liver, and this is far from ideal.
As if this wasn’t bad enough already, painkillers can actually make your pain worse in the future. The root cause of your pain has never been solved, your symptoms have only been masked. This is extremely dangerous. When our symptoms are eased temporarily we carry on as usual. But, if we do this, we risk doing more harm than good, and suffer with the consequences of this later on.
Our Chiropractors help to solve the root cause of your pain by finding subluxations in the spine. Subluxations are interferences or blockages in the spine that interfere with the signals being sent between the brain and the rest of the body. When this happens, the body can’t function as well as it’s supposed to. This affects our natural healing processes.
When a specific, controlled force is applied to a spinal joint, this helps to release any tension and reduce this interference. The body then starts to heal and restore itself, so your pain should reduce as a result. The pain shouldn’t return if you continue to make healthy lifestyle choices and attend maintenance chiropractic care. Most people wait until they are sick or injured to take action, but we should be taking proactive, preventative steps before this happens.
But, when we are sick or injured, we should go to the relevant specialists. If we are experiencing chest pain or a heart attack, we would want to see a cardiothoracic specialist. If our neck or back is hurting, surely we would still want to see someone who specialises in this? In other words, a Chiropractor.
So, when you compare the long-term risks of taking painkillers to the risk of chiropractic, chiropractic comes out as the safer, long-term solution. Click here to book a consultation with one of our expert Chiropractors.
